Level 2 or DC fast — how to decide

Level 2 charging runs on 240-volt AC, the same supply as an electric dryer or range. It delivers 7 to 19 kW, which translates to roughly 25 to 35 miles of range per hour. It is inexpensive to install, easy on the battery, and correct for any vehicle that sits parked for four hours or more — which covers essentially all home charging, most workplace charging and overnight fleet depots.

DC fast charging bypasses the car's onboard AC charger and feeds the battery directly at 50 to 350 kW. It is the only sensible choice when dwell time is short: highway stops, retail parking, or a fleet vehicle that must go back out in half an hour. It is also dramatically more expensive to install, because a single 180 kW unit can require more electrical service than a small office building.

The mistake we see most often is a business installing DC fast charging for employee parking. Employees are there eight hours. Level 2 costs a fraction as much, serves more cars per dollar, and nobody notices the difference — the car is full either way by lunchtime.
